Geography

Geography Intent

At Cedars Primary School and Nursery we want our pupils to have a passion and curiosity for Geography. Our curriculum strives to ensure that our pupils gain coherent knowledge and understanding in the key areas of the subject – map skills, locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography. Units of study are carefully planned in mixed-ages and the skills and knowledge pupils require are clear and progressive. This enables pupils to build upon their prior learning and make links across the curriculum.  They will gain confidence in interpreting maps, sources and case studies to locate and form their own ideas on places across the world.

Our pupils learn to develop their interpretation and communication skills through field work investigation and practical learning, making use of our local area and surroundings. They have the opportunity to become active and inquisitive learners by asking questions and making connections to prior learning. Our pupils engage in class discussion, where they are enabled to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge, and understanding of current and contemporary issues in society and the environment, and to justify them using the knowledge and vocabulary taught and displayed throughout the unit.
