We believe every child can be a mathematician and have high expectations for them to succeed. We want our children to be confident and secure in their knowledge and understanding of this subject and fluent in their application of it. This will provide them with the skills they require for their future learning journey.
We aspire for our pupils to:
We are a learning community and all staff develop their pedagogical understanding of teaching for maths mastery through opportunities to plan collaboratively, coaching and mentoring, participating in staff meetings and INSETs and working in partnership with local the local Maths Hub (Enigma).
Our school continues to embed Mastering Number within Reception and Key Stage 1 and Mastering Number at Key Stage 2. Furthermore, we are working with the Enigma Hub in a Teaching for Mastery work group. We also have a Primary Mastery Specialist working in our school.
We have been running fluency workshops for our parents and carers. By completing a range of fun activities, they have been learning what their child is taught at school and how to help them at home to develop their fluency and number sense.
This is the White Rose Calculation Policy that we follow as a school.
It is divided into four sections: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
The policy explains the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach we use to teach maths. This means children first use practical resources, then pictures and diagrams, and finally numbers and symbols to solve problems.
It also includes sentence starters that help children explain their mathematical thinking using the correct mathematical language.
Key examples and representations are included to help children see and understand the maths, rather than just follow a method.
