Special Educational Needs

All children at Cedars Primary School and Nursery are welcomed and valued and we give a strong commitment to equality of opportunity. We recognise that at some time during their school experience, many children will have need for special support and possibly a specifically designed programme of work beyond the usual provision within the classroom.

Where a child needs support and intervention, which is additional to or different from that which is usually provided within the classroom, it is considered that this child has special education needs. For some children this may occur over a short period of time while for others, it will last for their whole school life. If your child’s teacher thinks your child may have special needs, they will discuss this in confidence with you at the earliest opportunity.

A senior member of staff leads and oversees the provision for children with special needs, and in addition there are a number of outside professionals whom we can call upon if additional advice or support is needed. If you as a parent have any concerns about your child or their progress, we ask that you please discuss this in the first instance with your child’s class teacher.

SEND Local Offer

About the Local Offer

The way that children and young people with special educational needs and disability (SEND) are supported changed on 1 September 2014.

The Children and Families Act 2014 has seen the introduction of Education, Health and Care Plans and a ‘Local Offer’ for families with a child or young person with SEND.

What is the Local Offer?

The Local Offer is a directory of information that helps families to find and access support and, through getting families feedback on the Local Offer, will become a useful tool in considering what services need to be changed and developed. All local authorities are required to have their own local offer as part of the government’s SEND reforms.
