Years 1 & 2

Years 1 and 2 Curriculum Overview

Bright Lights. Big City

Welcome back to school for the start of the Spring Term!

In Maths our learning will be to understand coins and number sentences using money, multiplication and division and solving problems such as missing number questions. We will continue to consolidate skip-counting in 2s, 5s and 10s as well as fluency with basic number facts and number bonds.

Our English lessons will cover more elements of grammar such as exclamation marks, verbs, suffixes, commas in lists and adjectives all through the context of a story. We will be creating our own characters, problems and settings and writing our own versions of a text. We will have spellings each week which will be sent home along with continuing our daily phonics lessons to support reading and writing. Your child will change their phonics book on a Monday and Thursday during their phonics lesson – they will not need to change them at any other time.

In History we will be learning about the Great Fire of London and how sources are used to help us learn about the past. We will be learning about the changes that happened after the fire and what caused it to happen.

In DT we are going to be looking at healthy eating and lifestyle including where our food comes from and how it is transformed from raw product into things that we eat.

In Science we will be covering properties of materials, exercise and its impact on our bodies, hygiene and staying well and classifying animals.

We will also be doing RE, PE, PSHE, Computing and Music!

Here are some things you might want to do at home:

  •  Research Samuel Pepys and find out why he is an important source of information when learning about the Great Fire of London.
  • Help an adult to make a healthy lunch- have a look at the ‘Eat-well plate’ for some ideas to make it balanced.

We look forward to seeing some of the things you have been learning about at home.
