Writing

Writing Intent

At Cedars Primary School and Nursery, we believe that all children should have the opportunity to become enthusiastic, skilled writers with a love of writing and vocabulary.

Through Cedars’ adapted Grammasaurus scheme and use of drawing club (Reception and Year 1) and story dough (nursery), our children will develop a passion for rich language, appropriate grammar and have the capabilities to write for a range of purposes and audiences. The use of high-quality texts from a range of genres not only inspires and engages children as writers but also as readers; at Cedars reading is at the heart of our curriculum. Our writing teaching focuses first on children becoming confident in their transcription to then later developing their compositions skills to add flair and imagination to their writing.

We have a strong focus on handwriting starting in Early Years, to ensure our children have legible, cursive and correctly formed letters before leaving us.

We want all of our children to take pride in their work and to believe that each piece of writing will be better than the last. We believe that all children are writers and encourage them to take ownership of their writing through editing and publishing: writing for a purpose. It is important to us that children understand the impact and importance of writing in our everyday lives and we set out to equip our children with the necessary skills to be successful citizens.

Aaaaaargh at the beach

sandy beach
sunny day
shark attack
run away!
bag of donuts
cup of tea
seagull swooping
down at me!
At the pier
Amusement time
wasting my pennies
day light crime!
sandy toes
sandy knees
car park picnic
with lots of cheese!
poo and wee
in the bay
Red flag raised
run away!
End of day
cod and chips
really nice
family trip!
