At Cedars Primary School and Nursery, we want pupils to foster an interest in the subject of Design Technology through discrete lessons. The Design and Technology curriculum aims to inspire students to be innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation and evaluation, suggesting improvements for future products.
We teach Design and Technology using the Kapow primary scheme and this scheme strives to enable children to apply their skills of research, development, designing, making and evaluating of: mechanics, structures, textiles, electrical systems (KS2 only), the digital world (KS2 only) and cooking and nutrition. We aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements. In Early Years, Cornerstones is used, to enable children to gain knowledge and understanding of their world.
As a school, we want pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling and testing products and prototypes. We want children to carry out research, show initiative and ask questions to develop the knowledge of the users’ need, while also applying knowledge from other areas of the curriculum. Our students create products safely and hygienically by using a range of tools, equipment and materials.
Pupils learn how to use time efficiently by working constructively and productively with others to become responsible designers and makers. Through creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
