At Cedars Primary School and Nursery, we want our children to develop a love for art in all its variety. We want them to learn how to make their own creative choices and decisions, so that their art outcomes are personal and unique. Art influences all corners of our lives and we want our children to recognise the creative world as a potential for a future career as artist, designer, or architect.Â
Art and design is taught as a discrete subject and we use Kapow’s Art and design scheme of work. This scheme enables our children to: produce creative work, explore and record their ideas and experiences; be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques; evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language; and know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art. This scheme also meets the end of key stage expectations as outlined in the National curriculum for Art and design.
Each year, our children will progressively develop their knowledge and skills in drawing, painting and mixed-media, sculpture and 3D and craft and design. They will generate ideas, use their sketchbooks, develop their making skills, include formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour) in their work, expand their knowledge of artists and evaluate and analyse their work.
