Years 1 & 2

Years 1 and 2 Curriculum Overview

Street Detectives

This half term our topic will be called Street Detectives! This gives us lots of opportunities to learn about our local area and share the history of the wonderful place we live in.

In History we will be learning all about Newport Pagnell and the key events that helped shape it into what it is today. As part of this we will get to learn a lot about Cedars too and how it fits into the history of the local area.

In DT we will be finding out what makes a good building. We will be designing and making our own houses and evaluating them to see what went well and what we could have done more successfully.

Science this half term is all about materials and plants. We will be doing a fun investigation as well as exploring the properties of materials and what they are used to make.

In English we will be learning about fables and other stories. We will be writing our own version of a fable as well as a fun Christmas tale which will amuse the whole family! Spellings will continue to be sent home weekly and your child will change their phonics book on a Monday and Thursday during their phonics lesson- they will not need to change them at any other time.

In maths we are continuing to learn about addition and subtraction before moving on to money and shape.

Here are some things you might want to do at home.

  • Look in detail at the outside of your own house and make a careful observational drawing.
  • Draw and label a design for your own fantasy home. What will your home be built from? How will you get in and out of your house? What will you have in your garden? Make a model of your fantasy house using junk materials.
  • Make a leaflet or short film all about your local community. Include drawings, photographs or footage to show what you can see and do in your local area. Write or record your thoughts on what it’s like to live there as well as ideas for improving it.
  • Go for a walk in your local area.
  • Draw a map of your street or are where you live. Add some labels to show where different things are. Where is your favourite local place near where you live? Why?

Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit on these days- they do not need their school uniform to change back into.

Please make sure you send your child to school with the following: re-fillable water bottle, book bag to hold their reading record, spelling book and reading book and their lunch box (if they are not school dinners). Can you also ensure your child has a suitable coat as the weather is getting colder. Thank you.
