Years 1 and 2 Curriculum Overview
Paws, Claws and Whiskers: Key Stage 1, Autumn 1
Welcome back to school for another year of exciting learning and having fun! This half term our topic will be Paws, Claws and Whiskers.
In Geography we will be exploring different animals and their habitats around the world, finding out that they need and why they are suited to those habitats.
In Art we will be learning about textures and patterns as well as weaving.
Within our PE lessons we will be covering fitness and multi-skills, spending time learning both outdoors and inside.
In Science we will be classifying animals, focusing on mammals, reptiles and birds this half term as well as learning the differences between herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
In Maths our learning will focus on place value and number. This will help us to secure the children’s understanding of number value and number bonds to help them become more fluent before looking at other mathematical processes.
Our English lessons will cover traditional tales, poetry and information texts. We will be focusing on securing the basics of writing and understanding the different text types we are covering. We will have spellings each week which will be sent home along with continuing our daily phonics lessons to support reading and writing. Your child will change their phonics book on a Monday and Thursday during their phonics lesson- they will not need to change them at any other time.
Here are some things you might want to do at home.
We look forward to seeing some of the things you have been learning about at home!
Key Stage 1 PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit on these days- they do not need their school uniform to change back into.
Please make sure you send your child to school with the following- re-fillable water bottle, book bag to hold their reading record, spelling book and reading book and their lunch box (if they are not school dinners). Can you also ensure your child has sun protection on prior to coming to school.
