Years 1 & 2

Paws, Claws and Whiskers

Welcome back everyone! We hoped you had a great summer and enjoyed the lovely weather.

This half term our English lessons will be all about traditional and familiar stories. Children will have the opportunity to listen to, read, act out, re-tell and write their own stories.

In Maths, Owls will be consolidating and extending their knowledge of number and using it to solve games and puzzles. Hedgehogs will also be working on numbers to 100 and having lots of opportunities to practice telling the time.

In Geography we will be learning about Kenya, where it is and what animals live there. We will also look at how the land and climate are different to the UK and Newport Pagnell!

In Science, Year 2 will be identifying parts of a plant and investigating what plants need to grow. They will also find out about animals that have offspring. Year 1 will be identifying wild and garden plants, identifying animals based on their diets and naming the basic parts of the body.

In Art we will begin with some observational drawings and then move onto collage in the style of Matisse.

In PE we will be working on our fitness, stamina and Physical Literacy skills like balance, co-ordination, throwing and catching.

Reading at home

As our first English unit is about familiar and traditional stories, it would be great if you could read some to the children at home. May you have Goldilocks, The Three Little Pigs, Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man etc. Talk about the story and the characters with your child. Do they like the stories? What are the best bits?

Some other activities you might like to try at home:

  • Look at the continent of Africa on a map and find Kenya
  • Have a go at a collage using things you have around the house

In a few weeks’ time, homework will continue to be set every other week on a Thursday and needs to be handed in on a Tuesday. The expectations are:

Year 1

  • Reading with your child
  • Practice common exception words
  • Practice spellings related to phonics sounds (to be sent home in a few weeks)

Year 2

  • Reading with your child and your child reading aloud at least 5 times a week
  • Practice common exception words
  • Practice spellings (to be sent home in a few weeks)
