Years 1 & 2

Years 1 and 2 Curriculum Overview

Paws, Claws and Whiskers: Key Stage 1, Autumn 1

Welcome back to school for another year of exciting learning and having fun! This half term our topic will be Paws, Claws and Whiskers.

In Geography we will be exploring different animals and their habitats around the world, finding out that they need and why they are suited to those habitats.

In Art we will be learning about textures and patterns as well as weaving.

Within our PE lessons we will be covering fitness and multi-skills, spending time learning both outdoors and inside.

In Science we will be classifying animals, focusing on mammals, reptiles and birds this half term as well as learning the differences between herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

In Maths our learning will focus on place value and number. This will help us to secure the children’s understanding of number value and number bonds to help them become more fluent before looking at other mathematical processes.

Our English lessons will cover traditional tales, poetry and information texts. We will be focusing on securing the basics of writing and understanding the different text types we are covering. We will have spellings each week which will be sent home along with continuing our daily phonics lessons to support reading and writing. Your child will change their phonics book on a Monday and Thursday during their phonics lesson- they will not need to change them at any other time.

Here are some things you might want to do at home.

  • Make a scrapbook all about your pet, or a pet belonging to someone you know. What is the pet’s name? What type and breed of animal is it? Add photographs and information about interesting things they do or things they need to stay healthy.
  • Choose an endangered animal to draw or paint. Find out where it lives and why it is endangered. Bring your painting to school and tell your friends about your animal.
  • Explain to your family what it means if an animal is a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore. Can you find some examples of these animals?
  • Draw or paint the camouflage markings of some animals. Why do they have these markings? How are they all different or similar?
  • Find out where in the world all your favourite animals come from! Use a world map and mark them on with labels or pictures.

We look forward to seeing some of the things you have been learning about at home!
